What Happens Earth Had Rings like Saturn?

Three giant planets, to name Jupiter, Uranus, Saturn all of them have rings and in case of Earth, sadly it just didn't make it to the list of ringed planet of our solar system. That is somehow sad.

If it had rings would it still be able to host life?

How having rings would change our lives?

This is What Happens if earth was ringed like saturn and if you are seeking an answer to these curiosity inciting question then you are at very right place, just stick to this article as that is just going to be discussed here at great details. All you have to do is just stick to the article.

When the earth was young, it most likely had a ring of rock debris around it. Four and half billion years ago another planet hit the earth. The giant planet set the matter hurling into the earth's orbit but it just didn't stay like that for long. The rocky debris soon formed another celestial body the one which we now call the moon. The moon made out of that rock debris (as theorist suggests) still lit up our night skies even after a huge time and gives us enthralling view of skies at night.

So, what would having rings looked like?

Well, having rings would looked like way more spectacular then having just gray rock of the moon. Moon is barely a grey rock that is not so entertaining or fascinating.

But What if earth gets such beautiful rings by tomorrow?

In that case, much of life wouldn't survive this renovation process. As, that would be too hard for us to survive, we may die at the start or somewhere at middle.

In order to get rings it is not necessary to have another collision like in the past. All we have to do is that we would just crumble the moon.  And for that we would only need to move it little closer. The gravitational pull that our planet exerts on the moon is not equal everywhere. It is much strong to the side of the moon that is closest to us. There is a reasonable limit in the laws of our universe about how closer two bodies can get in to each other. That is called as the roche limit. If bodies crosses that and get any closer to each other then accordingly, the larger body shred smaller body into pieces. The distance of the roche limit depends on the size mass and density of two bodies. For example, the sun rips up the comets which come 1.3 kilometers of it. For earth, it will tear apart any comet 18000 kilometers away. For moon the roche limit would be about 95 hundred kilometers. So, if moon is somehow made to cross our rosh limit it would be shredded into pieces and will eventually make rings around our earth. The crumbling of moon would result into a giant ring around earth which would indeed make it look beautiful but only from far away. As, things would drastically change right on the surface of earth if it gets rings by crumbling its very moon.

For rings we get from something similar to the size of moon, would be about 5 thousand kilometers wide and about 9 and a half kilometers thick. But these rings wouldn't be like the saturn' s rings which are so thick and icy. In our case, the rings can not be icy as we are so close to sun to keep our rings icy. Resultantly, the rings we might get can not be icy owing to our position in goldilocks zone. Also, we would be able to see rings all the time from very surface of the earth owing to brightness of the rings. And if we still had the moon despite having rings after crumbling it, well, hmm, in that case it wouldn't be so bright as it is today in our night skies.

Also, there would be some other consequences in case of having rings around our planet. The rings suddenly hugging our planet earth would surely disrupt the internal navigation system of our animals. In addition, it would be difficult for sunlight to reach us out of those rings so that will effect our photosynthesis on earth and our oxygen supplies. In the shadow of the rings, the earth's temperature would so cold and many parts would become uninhabitable. Our communication systems and television which we watch is only possible because of satellites but in the case of having a hug of gigantic rings, surely our satellites would find themselves in gian pool of rocks. So, we would have to find a way to keep our internet alive in order to keep our selves connected to the each other. This disruption of our satellites would also negatively impact our T.V and also to the radio communication.

But if we just don't get our sunlight and oxygen blocked by the existence of rings we would live it just fine. In that scenario, all we have to do is to find some other ways of communication because a ring  full of rocks circling us would make impossible for satellite to carry on their works. In addition, we would also have to forget about our dream of space travel and  becoming some advanced civilization on kardashev scale because the rock blockade would make our space travel almost impossible. Our rockets, shuttles, crafts would not be able to cross that massive storm of rocks to reach the outer space. The international space stations would also not be able to carry out their circling of the earth. These dreams of space exploration would be a long lost dream.

But these rings wouldn't last longer one day they will stop being a ring and would shower on earth. That would be even worse and would cause  enough damage. Thus, this is what would have happened in case our earth had rings like saturn. Luckily we don't have them and its unlikely to have rings in any near future. Maybe somewhere far and deeper in our space some earth like planets might be having rings and life is alive and kicking there. In case of our earth, having rings would cause enough damage. So, appreciate the unblocked sunlight and breath your oxygen happily and enjoy your internet, which is only possible because we are not having rings around us.
